Getting started
How are essays marked?
Each essay is scored on structure, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling against a rubric modelled on public 11+ mark schemes, with a short explanation and a clear next focus. You can type or paste the essay, upload a Word or PDF file, or upload photos of handwriting — for handwriting you check the text first, so a misread word is never marked as a spelling mistake.
Is my child's writing kept private?
Yes — every essay and its feedback is visible only to your own account, never shared publicly or with other parents.
Is this affiliated with any grammar school or exam board?
No. The marking rubric is modelled on publicly available 11+ mark schemes, but AceEleven isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Sutton, Kent, CSSE, Barnet, or any other school or exam board.
Spelling, punctuation & maths practice
How does the spelling practice work?
Your child hears a word read aloud, then picks the correct spelling from a handful of look-alike options. They get instant feedback, and every word is colour-coded on an A–Z board — grey for not tried, red for needs practice, green for got it — so you can both see progress. There is also exam-style practice: a sentence is split into four groups of words and your child picks the group with the spelling mistake, or N if there isn’t one, using every statutory word from Years 3 to 6.
Does AceEleven have timed tests?
Yes, for every practice type except essays: Maths, Punctuation, exam-style Spelling and the word-list Spelling modules (Statutory, Common and Custom). Switch on “Timed test” before you start, then choose a pace (Relaxed, Exam pace or Challenge; the seconds per question are set sensibly for each subject). On the monthly plan you can also choose a 10, 20 or 30 question test. A countdown runs on the server, so refreshing the page doesn’t reset it. There are no hints along the way: when the test ends, or time runs out, you see every answer with its working, including any questions you didn’t reach. Those count as missed, but they don’t change a question’s green or red status.
Can I add my own spelling words?
Yes. On the monthly plan, a parent can add their own words — this week's school spellings, say. Editing the list needs your account password, so your child can practise without being able to change it, and they practise it just like the built-in lists.
What does the punctuation practice cover?
Exam-style questions, in the same format as the real papers: a sentence is split into four groups of words, and your child picks the group with the mistake in capital letters or punctuation, or N if there isn’t one. Topics cover sentence endings, commas, apostrophes, speech marks, colons and semicolons, and brackets, dashes and hyphens. Every answer comes with a one-line reason, and your child can drill one topic, take a mixed round, or retry the questions they got wrong.
Plans & payment
Do I need the monthly plan for spelling and punctuation practice?
Yes — spelling and punctuation practice, full essay history and 1,500 credits a month come with the monthly plan. Free and pay-as-you-go accounts can still get essays marked.
How do I pay?
Sign in, open Plans & billing, pick a plan and continue to Stripe's secure checkout. We never see or store your card details, and Stripe emails you a receipt.
Can I cancel the monthly plan anytime?
Yes — cancel whenever you like from Manage billing. You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for; unused credits don't carry over into the next month.
What happens to pay-as-you-go credits I don't use?
They don't expire. Top up whenever, and use the credits at your own pace — this is the main difference from the monthly plan's credits, which reset each period.
Start with 50 free credits.
