Cloze, or sentence completion, is a standard part of many 11+ English papers. Your child reads a short passage with ten numbered gaps and picks the right word or phrase for each one from five options. Once the passage is handed in, every gap is marked with a plain reason.
What the gaps test
- Word form. Choosing the right form of a word: noun, adjective, adverb or verb part
- Grammar. Tense, agreement and the right verb or pronoun form
- Vocabulary in context. Choosing the word or idiom that fits the meaning
- Prepositions & phrases. The right preposition or short phrase for the sentence
- Linking words. Conjunctions and relative words that join ideas
- Confusable words. Look-alike and sound-alike words (their / there, whether / weather)
Each passage is chosen for your child automatically and never repeats. Choose a kind of text to focus on, or leave it open for a balanced mix.
