Non-verbal reasoning

Non-verbal reasoning practice, one picture puzzle at a time.

Exam-style picture puzzles with five answer pictures (A–E), in the styles 11+ papers use. Every puzzle is drawn by our own generator and checked so that there is exactly one sensible answer, and every answer comes with a clear explanation of the rule, so a wrong answer turns into a lesson.

Question styles

  • Shape Analogies. Work out how the first shape changes into the second, then do the same to the third.
  • Star Patterns. Find the triangle that completes the pattern in the star.
  • Odd One Out. Spot the picture that doesn’t belong with the other four.
  • Series. Work out what comes next in the sequence of pictures.
  • Matrix Puzzles. Complete the 3×3 square using the rules in its rows and columns.
  • Rotations. Find the shape that is the same, just turned round (not flipped over).
  • Mirror Images. Pick the reflection of a shape in a mirror line.
  • Shape Codes. Crack the secret code from three examples, then code a new picture.

Start with a mixed round, drill a single question style, or retry only the questions that need work. Switch on a timed test when it’s time to build exam pace.

Explanation: Look along the line of four triangles that goes through the blank one. Its pattern is in the number of shapes: the other three triangles on that line show the rule, and option D is the only one that completes it. The other options break the pattern.

The worst thing in non-verbal practice is an answer key that’s wrong, or a puzzle with two right answers. So every puzzle here is built and checked by code before a child ever sees it.

Exactly one right answer

Every puzzle is built from a rule, then checked by code so that only one answer fits. There is nothing ambiguous to second-guess.

Five clearly different choices

The answer pictures are compared as images, and a puzzle is thrown out if any two look alike. Your child chooses between real ideas, not near-identical drawings.

The rule, explained

Every answer comes with a plain explanation of the rule. Tricky puzzles come back later, so a wrong answer turns into a lesson that sticks.
